The Jamaica Library Service (JLS) was established in 1948. The JLS provides a public library service and school library service through a network of 111 public library locations and 898 government school libraries. The JLS is the largest institution in the island that offers free membership, access to the internet computers and other devices. The JLS stages an annual National Reading Competition that targets adults and children library members. The Competition is in its 35th year and encourages and develops reading skills, cultivates an appreciation for books and facilitates exposure to highly rated literature. Competitors are awarded with attractive and diverse prizes each year.
