Serres Central Public Library

Greece

The Public Central Library of Serres was founded in 1952. It was temporarily and for short periods, in private buildings and at the 1st High School of Serres. In 1963 it was moved to the second floor of the building of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serres and in 2006 it was relocated to a privately owned building on N Street. Nicholas 20 of the city of Serres. Its operation is governed by the provisions of N. 3149/2003 (Government Gazette/A/141/10.6.2003).

It is a Legal Entity of Public Law and is under the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs from which it is supervised and funded. It is administered by the Director and the Electoral Council with a three-year term appointed by the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs. The core of the first collection of books was created with donations from various institutions, such as the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, the National Library of Greece, the French Consulate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as by individual donor friends of the Library.

Today, the collections are completed with purchases of printed and audiovisual material, a process that is the main way of informing and enriching them. It also accepts many donations not only from individual citizens but also from institutions and organizations.
