Jack loses his job and his trailer home within a single day, and takes off with his wife on an odyssey across the Texan desert to California, where the television show The Dream Machine offers untold riches. An indictment of the American dream, the novel tells how Sam becomes embroiled in corruption and eventually ends up fighting to stay alive.
