Ellen Gilchrist (1935–2024) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet renowned for her sharp, humorous, and unsentimental portrayals of Southern life. She achieved major literary success later in life, publishing her first collection of stories at age 46. Gilchrist is best remembered for her National Book Award-winning collection Victory Over Japan and her recurring cast of headstrong, often autobiographical female characters.
