Municipal Library of Thessaloniki

Greece

The Municipal Library of Thessaloniki was founded in 1932, but the works for its establishment began in 1938 by Georgios Vafopoulos, who was essentially its first director and the inauguration of its operation took place in the spring of 1939 in a hall of the Mansion of the HANTH with about 2,500 books. During the Greco-Italian war 1940-41 the Municipal Library was forced to close its reading room, but organized a system of book lending to the injured in our city. During the Occupation she stopped working and her books were saved in various warehouses.
