ABOUT
THE BOOK

For eleven-year-old Kingie, there are lessons to be learned from drug trafficking. His first job is as a lookout, working from a strategic spot on the hillside slums of Rio, where children signal to dealers with flying kites to warn of drug busts. As Kingie grows older he realises that, in order to survive, and keep a place in the hierarchy of crime, he must also keep a close watch on himself. The big drug dealers aren’t stupid about excess consumption because they’ve seen it all before. Inferno uncovers the dark underworld of Rio’s favelas, where the brutish drama of everyday life leads to terrible choices. To survive, Kingie finds that he is climbing the criminal ladder himself – to a dark place where violence reigns and betrayal lurks in corners where you least expect it.
